I am not suggesting running away from the problem, rather refusing to be drawn in to a sound bite debate. Civility has been too long gone from our political discourse and I believe that engaging with those who believe that the loudest and/or nastiest voice is the way to prove themselves right is akin to trying to teach a pig to sing.

I had started a Facebook conversation trying to "out" the attempted new legislation that would limit our civil liberties more, and I thought that it was supported by Obama, so I attacked him. I was wrong and corrected myself after. However, the whole conversation turned into two women Facebook "friends" of mine calling each other "nutjobs," etc. I deleted most of that converation. Yes, Ellennuemann, I truly believe we have totally forgotten "good manners," something that, especially "online," takes place all the time. Plus, the ignorance is terrible. I am a retired librarian and I, at least, remember how just being "civil" matters a lot.

Personally, I don't think running away from the problem is the answer. America has become a country of entitlement. Indeed, we the people are entitled to our opinions but do not have the right to become overbearing bores while expressing them. We seem to have lost our ability to demonstrate common courtesy in the face of political adversity. Time for a crash course in good manners !!

Dear Martin,

Yes, the logic of insisting on bankruptcy rather than negotiating a new loan based on reduced principal (but still more than the price of the house on the auction block) may make sense re: the balance sheet of the bank, but as you infer it's all in how we keep track of Profit. For a more basic (il)logic of the profit system, please see the column of February 23, "Money or Wealth," especially the poem that begins the piece.

Peace and poetry,
Mort

Logic...If you start with the premise of profit, then it can all be very logical. There is more money to be made by forcing a bankruptcy than writing down the principal. There is more money to be made by replacing military equipment that has been consumed in war and supplying far flung troops than there is in peace. So you see, there is logic to their action, just not one that protects people or the earth!

Fantastic, fantastic article, Jude! Dad would smile at how you describe all these details in vivid reproduction! My favorite part was the table clutter! It was much less "there" when Josh and I were kids, but the pile grew exponentially after we moved out! Great memories! Dad had enough food ready at a moment's notice that he and Mom could have fed a starving village in Ethiopia! Just simply amazing! This is my favorite article you have ever written! Thanks!

I tried real hard to deal with a 'MoveOn basher' on Facebook, with a former 'friend.' I just had to unfriend her, she approaches every conversation, as 'hers' and if you don't agree with her on everything, you are toast. I am trying hard to be reasonable, and talk intelligently with people, but its almost impossible. What to do?

Ms. Ziavras--
I don't think the end worked for me for the reason you state above. I think the emotions expressed were truly and deeply felt and ergo overrode the surrealism.

However, I will be mailing you half my paycheck. You covered in your response all the things I did not mention but wanted to.

And you pointed out that not only did the staging not adhere "truthfully" to the words in the libretto - but it did not adhere "truthfully" to the basic elements of "proper" staging based on feelings and emotions.

Please do not contact the editor and offer your expertise. She might fire me..

I loved reading your review. I agree with you on all counts. The staging is what ruined everything for me. The director had Dessay running around in act one, climbing on the couch during Sempre Libera. It made her coughing in that scene (which is in the score) all the more implausible. More importantly, he had all of the characters so far away from each other it was hard to imagine there was any emotional bond between Violetta and Germont. She had to literally run across the entire stage for the intimate moment when she asks him to “embrace me like a daughter” and quickly ran away again. And the hide and seek scene with Alfredo was simply ridiculous.

Do they even read the librettos? How dare they have Dessay needlessly traipsing around the stage while doing vocal acrobatics knowing that it will compromise her voice. Especially since she has had her share of vocal surgeries in recent years. Yes, she can sing while laying upside down, but is it good for her to tax her instrument unduly? Or is she competing with the Delilah who climbed a 30-foot ladder and did a split while singing her aria. I watched with binoculars with horror as Dessay ran around the shards of the broken glass barefoot (even if it was plastic, really!)! Has it come to this?

By the end, I was so hellbent on enjoying the last scene that I made it a point to not let the stage design or the staging ruin it for me. Perhaps that’s what happened to you, too.

We opera singers spend our whole career learning to do the roles to be true to the composers’ intentions, phrasing and stage movement, and making the words in their librettos count. I find it insulting that we have to endure this narcissism in which stage directors and designers jeopardize the singers well-being to be noticed by the critics.

Thank you, Peggy.
See you in South Fallsburg at St. Andrew's concert with the Bronx Opera on Saturday night. No tiresome updatings for opera or Broadway there. Unless Eliza Doolittle sings I Could Have Danced All Night in a disco or swerve version or Violetta performs her death scene in a surrealistic setting.

Bravo as usual Barry. Excellent review of Manon, and since I did not see it, I enjoyed reading about what I had missed. I bet I would agree with you both about Anna Netrebko's stella performance, and the messed-up mise-en-scene. We look forward to your insightful reviews.

Dear Tracey —

The 1% may have the dollars, whatever their worth of late, but we 99% have the people, the imagination, and the talent. We can take the values the fat cats profess — self reliance, entrepreneurship, family farms, buy local campaigns… and turn them into actual entities that will give capitalism a run for its money: state banks and non-profit credit unions, worker owned factories, large farmers' markets, CSAs, and urban food co-ops, and whatever other enterprises we think up. We already have a head start with many examples up and running.

Politically, we already have an alternative party that will look after the environment and see to policies that that benefit the public — the Green Party.

In addition, we can depend on the greed after money & power that drive the 1%. They will test the limits of legality and acceptability and will overreach. For prime examples try: Richard Nixon, Enron, House Whip (or Hammer) Tom DeLay, Bernie Madoff, Gov Scott Walker (WI), Gov Bob McDonnell (VA), Rush Limbaugh, and others to come.

Your characterization of the fat cat cyst-em is right on — it's pathological.

Peace and parody,
Mort
