MONTICELLO, NY (February 15, 2012) – Local students will have the opportunity to perform with the newly formed Sullivan County String Orchestra on Sunday, February 26 at 4:00 p.m. in the Eugene D.
Nesin Theatre, St. John Street, Monticello. The students will engage in a workshop starting at 10:00 a.m. to re-create Leopold Mozart’s “Toy Symphony.”
The students will participate and observe rehearsals by professional musicians including members of New Haven Symphony, The Greater Newburgh Symphony and students from The Juilliard School. They are members of a new ensemble “Sullivan County Strings” who will be giving its premiere performance of works by Mozart and Tchaikovsky before the “Toy Symphony.”
Members of “Sullivan County Strings” are Akiko Hosoi (member of the New Haven Symphony), Kim Mai Ngyuen and Avery Waite (students at The Juilliard School), Andrew Trombley (Monticello Native and Juilliard graduate), and Nancy Wegyrzn and Scott Glasser who are both members of The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra as well as music teachers in the area. Wegyrzn teaches at the Monticello High School and Glasser teaches at the Liberty School District. This ensemble will perform Mozart’s “Eine Kleine Nacht Musik” and Tchaikovsky’s “Souvenir de Florence” in the first half of the concert.
The students participating in the workshop and concert won’t be the only ones involved in this project. “Toy Symphony” will require an interactive audience experience. Alongside the traditional instruments of the orchestra, the work calls for whistles, rattles, bells, and more. The toys will be handed out to young people and those young at heart in the audience. The audience will become performers under the direction of area high school students. Participating audience members will come onstage with the musicians to help with the performance.
Tickets with toys are $8.00 for children 3-10 with one free adult. As this is a fundraiser to help support future programming there is a suggested ticket donation price of $5.00. Tickets are available at the door or pre-concert on the web at www.nesinculturalarts.org and by phone at 845-794-6013. Nesin Cultural Arts is a non-profit, tax deductable 501(c)3 organization.
