Come Back to Fort Delaware
August 24, 2011 by The Catskill Chronicle
NARROWSBURG, NY (August 24, 2011) – Have you ever had a job at Fort Delaware? Labored dipping candles? Forging nails? Spinning yarns?
In honor of Labor Day weekend, former employees with a substantiating photo (or at least a good
story) will be admitted free to Fort Delaware Museum of Colonial History when accompanied by a paying friend or family member.
In the photo at left, former Sullivan County Historian, the late James W. Burbank, right, and his daughter, Peggy, demonstrate the new stocks when Fort Delaware Museum of Colonial History first opened in Narrowsburg , NY in 1957. Talk about being tied to your job!
On Labor Day weekend, former staff members can come back and reminisce, and help the current staff identify some old photos in the files or name carvings on the table (anyone know “TAMMY ’83”?) – and hear how the current tour guides have updated the museum’s interpretation.
Fort Delaware’s hours are Friday, Saturday and Monday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday: Noon to 5:00 p.m.
As an added attraction, current Sullivan County Historian John Conway will offer his popular lecture: “Sullivan County’s Big Industries: Timber, Tanning and Tourism” at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend, and be available for questions and answers about early life in the Upper Delaware River Valley.
For further information, call 845-252-6660 or 845-807-0261
Fort Delaware Museum of Colonial History, now operated by the Sullivan County Division of Public Works, is located along the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway, 6615 State Route 97, in Narrowsburg, New York.
