GLEN SPEY, NY (August 25, 2011) – Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther (D,C-Forestburgh) helped celebrate the 104th birthday of Town of Lumberland citizen, Carl Hentschel.

His actual birthday was August 16th.

Hentschel’s an active participant with the Lumberland Senior Center in Glen Spey where the party was held.

“Mr. Hentschel has lived a very interesting life,” said Assemblywoman Gunther. “It is hard to
believe he is 104 years old! I am so glad that the Office for the Aging invited me to join their party for
Carl.”

Carl Hentschel was born in Breslau Germany on August 16, 1907. He immigrated to the United States with his parents under a farm worker visa arriving at Ellis Island on June 14, 1923 and lived in College Point, Queens.

For 40 years, he worked for the New York Life Insurance Company and pursued his education by attending night school at Pratt Institute and New York University.

He subsequently became the head of the elevator maintenance department at NY Life.

Carl met his wife, Marily, in Queens and they were married for 54 years. She predeceased him in 1998.

During the war years of 1942 – 1945, Carl served his country as Link Trainer Instructor and
later in the Military Intelligence Corps.

Carl and Marily adopted two war orphan brothers and is a very proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather of 2 sons, 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

In 1956 Carl and Marily became involved with the Black Forest Colony in Glen Spey. He and
Marily soon retired and became year-round residents of the Town of Lumberland.

“Carl has been a mentor and inspiration to all his friends and neighbors in Glen Spey,” said
Assemblywoman Gunther. “He is truly a remarkable man.”

Also, attending the party and pictured with Assemblywoman Gunther and Mr. Hentschel was
Sullivan County Legislator Kathy LaBuda representing District 2 which includes Lumberland.
