To the editor:
I was absolutely appalled while I read the letter to the editor “31 % Fail Out of Nursing Program at SCCC.”
I am an SCCC nursing student. I know those who failed and I really feel for them. However, they failed because they were incompetent.
These students who failed could not complete 3 skills in 30 minutes.
Since 1st semester, we were told that we would need to complete certain skills tests in order to progress to the next semester. These few students could not pass their tests, therefore they are out of the program.
We were also told, since day 1, to keep up with our skills because the testing continues to get harder. I studied during every break from school and went into the lab anytime I could (as per open lab hours) and passed.
I know a lot of other students who did the same and passed.
If these students can not pass out 2 meds and complete 1 skill in 30 minutes, how are they going to be competent nurses this summer after graduation? It only gets harder when you have to do skills on real people in the hospital, not manikins like we have in the lab.
All of this bickering has taken up so much of our class time and it all needs to stop.
