To the Editor –
In response to the THR Editorial regarding the majority of the Legislature “giving themselves the power ” to change the Charter: The truth is that the county Charter itself gives the simple majority the very authority in Section C1.05 Revision of the Charter as it states, “Nothing in this section shall be construed to mean that the County Legislature, by a majority of votes, may not propose propositions for amendment of this charter… ”
In addition, Section 1-7 states “…such local laws or ordinances may be amended, deleted, or changed from time to time as the County Legislature deems desirable.”
The reality is that, in fact there have been numerous amendments to the Charter throughout the years allowable by a simple majority in enacting local laws.
So in moving forward, I applaud my colleagues of this bi-partisan majority including Gene Benson, Cora Edwards, Alan Sorenson, Kitty Vetter who have stepped up to enact much needed change.
