To the Editor:
The Pennsylvania Utility Commission (PUC) just approved an overlay area code
system as relief for the 570 area code, which is projected to run out of
numbers in the third quarter of 2011. Previously in 1998, Pike County was
changed from the 717 area code in a geographical area code split and was
given the new prefix code of 570.
The Pike County Chamber of Commerce has been representing local business
concerns regarding the proposed 570 area code number change in Pike County.
This past February, Danielle Jordan, Chief Executive Officer of the Pike
County Chamber of Commerce, gave a sworn testimonial statement before the
PUC panel. “This PUC approval will solve the continuous problem of running
out of access numbers every few years,” she stated. “In addition, the
overlay will save our local businesses the unnecessary expense of updating
all of their marketing materials.”
“The Overlay area code will take a little while to get used to because of
the 10 digit dialing that is required for local calls,” Jordan concluded. “However, the overlay will also ensure adequate numbering resources and is
the optimal solution to correct the issue going forward.
