Local charities to distribute the money to hurricane Irene victims

MONTICELLO, N.Y. (September 9, 2011) – Empire Resorts, Inc. and Entertainment Properties Trust held a press conference yesterday at the Sullivan County Government Center announcing a $100,000 donation to provide financial assistance for Sullivan County residents and businesses image affected by Hurricane Irene.

David Brain, President and CEO of Entertainment Properties Trust said, “We are strongly connected to Sullivan County through our Concord property and recognize that many families and businesses suffered extensive property damage from Hurricane Irene. The need to repair damage and restore many communities is urgent and we want to contribute to the effort.”

Emanuel Pearlman, Chairman of the Board of Empire Resorts said, "For over fifty years Monticello Raceway has been one of the area’s largest employers. We are acutely aware of how hard this recent natural disaster has impacted the Sullivan County community. We have directed that all of the $100,000 be distributed as quickly as possible. We hope our example encourages more Sullivan County businesses to step forward to help during this critical time.”

Entertainment Properties Trust and Empire Resorts principals were joined by area elected officials who helped identify local charities that could directly and quickly provide assistance to Sullivan County families.

“Community is all about neighbors helping neighbors,” said Congressman Maurice Hinchey. “With this donation, Empire Resorts and Entertainment Properties Trust exemplify what it means to be a good corporate citizen, and I thank them for their generosity.”

State Senator John Bonacic said, "Helping those in need should always be commended. I know this assistance will help many families who are recovering from Hurricane Irene."

“The recent storm has further financially strained organizations that serve as a safety net to our most vulnerable neighbors, but it hasn’t stopped the Federation for the Homeless from stepping up and providing necessary services. I appreciate the contribution of Empire Resorts and Entertainment Properties Trust. Their tremendous support of the organizations that do so much for so many is another example of their commitment to our community,” commented Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther.

“Empire Resorts and Entertainment Properties Trust have stepped forward and made a commitment to the county in a time of crisis, and I commend them for not only their extraordinary generosity, but for defining what it means to be a civic minded business,” said County Legislature Chairman Jonathan Rouis. “Their gift will help to alleviate the suffering of many of our friends and neighbors, and on behalf of the county I extend my gratitude.”

Money Raised Will Be Donated To St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

LIBERTY, NY (September 6, 2011) – Radio station Thunder 102 of Liberty, NY is has announced its first ever “Country Cares For St. Jude’s Kids Radiothon,” which will take place on September 15 and 16. The event is a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to help in the fight against childhood cancer.

https://i0.wp.com/www.promosuiteinteractive.com/onlinedb/wdnbfm/pics/St-Jude-Radiothon-Slide.jpgThe “Country Cares Radiothon” will run from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. each day and is sponsored by M & M Auto Group, Yellow Cab, Formaggio Cheese, Catskill Regional Medical Center, Hilltop Homes and Bethel Woods Center For The Arts.

St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital was founded by entertainer Danny Thomas and opened in 1962. Its mission … to find cures for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases through research and treatment.

In 1989, Randy Owen, member of the country group Alabama, met with founder Danny Thomas who asked him to play a part in curing childhood cancer and “Country Cares” was born. The first “Country Cares” event was designed as a nationally syndicated radiothon and it raised $1 million for St. Jude. However, these pioneers knew the country music industry and its fans were eager to do more and “Country Cares” has expanded to include over 200 radio stations across the United States. Make that 201 with the addition of Thunder 102 in Sullivan County, New York, whose ThunderHeads are anxious to become supporters of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Country Cares.

St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and around the world.  The protocols, developed by St. Jude’s research, help not only children in Thunder Country, but adults as well. These protocols are used by local doctors and hospitals in the treatment of local patients.

Besides the actual days of the Radiothon, over 50 businesses throughout Thunder Country are currently selling Bethel Woods Country Cares For St. Jude’s Kids Boot Cards for a minimum $1 donation, with more business being added each day. To donate, stop by one of the participating businesses listed below.

Also part of the week of fundraising efforts, the Monticello Dugout Club will be hosting the “1st Annual Homers 4 Hope Charity Home Run Derby” to benefit St. Jude’s at Monticello High School on Thursday, September 15.  For more information on this event, please call Mike Marra at (845) 794-8840. Other events are being planned and a more up-to-date listing of all events will be released closer to the dates of the Radiothon.

MONTICELLO, NY (September 6, 2011) – Sullivan County Manager David Fanslau has issued a Flash Flood Watch associated with heavy rain potential into Thursday afternoon.

Fanslau said, "The National Weather Service (NSW) has issued a flash flood watch in Sullivan County.  The remnants of Tropical Storm Lee will move north today and become stalled over the Central Appalachian Mountains in the vicinity of West Virginia tonight through Thursday. Moisture from Lee will be forced into a slow moving frontal system, and beneath a strengthening piece of the jet stream, bringing the potential for heavy rain to our region from tonight into Thursday.

“Significant rainfall is expected to redevelop across all of Central New York and Northeast Pennsylvania tonight. If the expected rainfall develops, flash flooding could develop by late tonight and continue into Wednesday night. The latest rainfall forecasts suggest storm totals through Thursday will range from two (2) to three (3) inches across the Upper Delaware Basin, to six (6) or more inches across the Upper Susquehanna, Chemung and Finger Lakes Basins. That rain could cause significant river flooding by Thursday afternoon, with most river locations having a chance to reach minor to moderate flood stage on Thursday. If all or more of the currently forecast rain falls there would be a potential for dangerous moderate to major flooding on some rivers by Thursday night and Friday. There is still considerable uncertainty with the track and forecast amounts of rain with this system. A small shift in the storm track will mean significant changes to rainfall and river crest forecasts.

“Residents are advised to not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely. Move to higher ground
I strongly urge any resident who lives near a stream, creek or river to be prepared and alert as this storm progresses, and to take preventative measures to protect their property through sandbags, etc. Outdoor, moveable property should be secured, and indoor property should be put up in case of flooding in the home. Furthermore, in case of emergency, all residents in these areas should make preparations to vacate their home if conditions warrant, and are strongly urged to comply with any and all reasonable requests from law enforcement or emergency responders during an emergency.

likeLIBERTY, NY (September 5, 2011) – In a world of constantly changing technology, there are occasionally bumps in the road that take a little while to get straightened out.

The Greater Liberty Chamber of Commerce uses Facebook as a tool to share information about all sorts of events and news that are pertinent to members of the community.

For an example, it’s an excellent tool for real-time updates on awards ceremonies, municipal meetings, elections, etc.

Unfortunately, pages had been set up in the past by different well-meaning individuals that garnered attention and fans, only to fail to be maintained as time passed.

The staff at Facebook has been very helpful in getting the pages set up, but have been constrained in their abilities to help us take them down.

NEW YORK STATE (September 4, 2011) – New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo began a new program this weekend called "Labor for Your Neighbor," which encourages citizens to pitch in and help their fellow New Yorkers hit the hardest by Hurricane Irene.

The "Labor for Your Neighbor" program was created to build on the outpouring of support already expressed by New Yorkers and to stimulate even more neighbor-to-neighbor help on this long holiday weekend.

Through this program, individual New Yorkers can join Governor Cuomo and roll up their sleeves to help their neighbors take small steps toward recovery.

Volunteers were shuttled into villages needing assistance and provided with appropriate equipment and supervision.

New Yorkers who want to help by making a financial contribution to recovery efforts can do so by clicking the link above and donating through a centralized effort coordinated by the United Way of New York State.

MONTICELLO, NY (August 31, 2011) – Sullivan County Manager David Fanslau issued the following statement today: "There have been some news media this morning that left the impression that a determination was made that Sullivan County was rejected for inclusion in federal disaster aid through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). That conclusion would be an incorrect conclusion.

“Sullivan County Public Safety Commissioner Dick Martinkovic has been in touch with the New York State Emergency Management Office (SEMO) and FEMA. The media coverage about some Hudson Valley counties being included or approved for federal disaster aid through FEMA was a result of an aerial visual inspection by FEMA officials of those areas, and due to the extensive visual damage, FEMA had those counties included in the President’s declaration.

“Sullivan County was included in Governor Andrew Cuomo’s disaster declaration requesting federal disaster aid. I have been in contact with representatives of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman Maurice Hinchey. FEMA will perform a Preliminary Damage Assessment of public infrastructure for public (local government) assistance early next week, through a site visit and inspection of damage throughout Sullivan County. FEMA will also perform a site inspection regarding individual Assistance (IA) that would make a determination for non-local government assistance.
Sullivan County officials anticipate that Sullivan County, and the Towns and Villages within Sullivan County, will qualify for Public Assistance for FEMA federal disaster aid for the County and Local Governments, and that President Obama will include Sullivan County in the disaster areas for New York State.

“Commissioner Martinkovic will coordinate the PDA process for Sullivan County with the Towns and Villages. In the interim, Sullivan County officials and Town and Village officials will continue to compile damage assessments in preparation for the FEMA site visit.”
