ROSCOE – Bench press. In a sense, that phrase from the weight room summed up the game between the home team Blue Devils (1-9) and the Tri-Valley Bears (5-5) showed up with eight hoopsters on the bench, while Roscoe only had one player left in reserve to send into the fray.
The Blue Devils seventh player, Jesse Huggins was sidelined with a shoulder injury sustained in a snowboarding accident.
The visitors demolished Roscoe in every frame (23-9, 20-10, 17-7 and 17-15), although the Blue Devils never called it quits, battling the Bears right down to the final buzzer.
Tri-Valley defeated Roscoe 77-41 in Wednesday night’s non-league boy’s varsity basketball game.
Tri-Valleys big guns: Khristian Newkirk (15 points including two ‘3’s), Ross Bonnell (14 points), Kevin Krom (9 points, all from outside the paint), and Tyler TerBush added a ‘three’.
Roscoe: Adam Hendrix (21 points including a ‘3’), Nate Brock (13 points including a trio of ‘3’s).
The Hendrix-Brock dynamic duo contributed 83% of their team’s total tally.
Stats from the free throw line: TVCS 3/5 (60%), RCS 10/14 (71%). It doesn’t get any better than, “Sweet Sixteen!”
One bright spot on Roscoe’s radar screen was a brief halftime celebration, when Jordan DeRosia’s mom showed up with a birthday cake to honor her cheerleader daughter’s 16th birthday.
“Tri-Valley has a fine team, they did what they had to do,” said Blue Devils coach Fred Ahart.
“They have some depth, they controlled the ball inside, and they are very strong on rebounds.”
“As always, it was a team effort, and everyone deserves mention,” added Ahart. “They all played hard…we had six guys and they played hard all the way.”
Bears coach Brian Tingley, said that with the win, Tri-Valley is now battling .500, well on the way to reaching their goal of grabbing a berth in the upcoming sectionals.
“The kids did well, they got out and ran in the beginning, took care of the ball and didn’t throw it away as much as they usually do, and our defense was okay.”
While Tri-Valley didn’t contain the Blue Devils shooting ability from beyond the paint as much as they would have liked, they did curtail Brock to three ‘three’s’ and Roscoe to a total of six from outside the arch.
“I like the way the kids are starting to look inside now, the guys are working hard to open up inside, and the other guys are looking to feed them the ball,” added Tingley.
“We’re looking to get some intermediate shots…not always ‘three’s’, layups or elbow jumpers.”
