MONTICELLO, NY (November 1, 2015) – The Sullivan County Federation for the Homeless is hosting a “Fuel The Federation” chicken dinner with all the fixings on Friday, November 13 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Federation’s location at 9 Monticello Street in Monticello. Attendees can dine in or take out.
Tickets can be purchased in advance at Kristt Co. on Broadway in Monticello. The purpose of the dinner is to offset fuel costs for the upcoming heating season.
According to director Kathy Kreiter, the Federation provides a warming station opportunity to all Sullivan County residents in need. “In addition to the homeless population, many of our senior citizens and others on fixed incomes are among those especially affected during the coldest winter months.” Kreiter notes. She adds that as a warming center, the Federation offers an opportunity for area residents to lower the cost of their energy use by providing a warm place for them to go for a few hours of the day. This allows them to turn down the thermostat and reduce their heating costs at home. Some other benefits include socialization, and access to other important services which may assist them in maintaining their independence in the community.
Sponsors for the dinner include Murray’s Chicken, The Farmer’s Market, Shoprite of Monticello and Zakarin & Sons. The event features a raffle and lottery tree drawing, and anyone bringing food donations will be entered for a special door prize raffle.
The Sullivan County Federation for the Homeless operates the only soup kitchen in Sullivan County, providing breakfast and lunch five days a week to local residents. In addition to several housing programs, they also operate two food pantries, one exclusively for Veterans.
