MONTICELLO, NY (February 12, 2014) – The Sullivan County Agriculture Protection Board, the Agricultural Advisory Board along with
the County’s Division of Planning and Environmental Management, is working to update the County’s Agriculture and Farmland Protection Plan. The original plan was completed in 1999.
This update will evaluate the current status of farming in the county, and identify projects and actions that can be undertaken in the future to promote and enhance agriculture. The plan will outline specific actions to preserve and enhance the County’s agriculture with a focus on ag-economic development strategies. As a first step, the County is seeking farmer and public input.
The Plan update is being funded in part by a grant from the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets. Sullivan County has retained Community Planning and Environmental Associates to facilitate the development of the Plan update. The anticipated project end date is August 2014.
The County will be conducting surveys of the general public and the farming community to gather information that will be incorporated into the Agriculture & Farmland Protection Plan update.
The public survey is now available online at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SC-AgPublicSurvey. This online survey will be open until February 28, 2014.
An agriculture producer’s survey, with questions targeted specifically for farmers, will be announced later this month.
