The very first Livingston Manor Rotary Ice Carnival was held on January 18, 1959 at Scudder’s Pond. Over the years some things have changed, such as the location. Other things have remained the same, including the Ice Carnival Dance and the participation of Rotarian Lee Siegel, who was present at the very first Ice Carnival.
There have been years when there wasn’t enough snow for the ice sculpture contest and it had to be trucked in. There have been years when the temperatures were not cold enough to make ice and the Ice Carnival had to be postponed or cancelled. This year there was plenty of snow and plenty of ice.
From a sunny day on Saturday, in which to craft the sculptures, to the wonder of snowflakes falling like magic crystals upon the exhibition skaters on Sunday, this year’s Ice Carnival was magic from start to finish and even included a past Ice Carnival Queen, now in charge of the carnival, as she watched her daughter Christina Babich receive the crown at the Ice Carnival Dance on Saturday evening.
Throughout the festivities Ted Waddell was there. To read his stories of each event just click a link below.
