Review by Constance & Eileen Slater
FORESTBURGH, NY (August 24, 2011) – “Ain’t Misbehavin’ ” is a musical revue named after the 1929 song by “Fats” Waller, and featuring Waller’s music.
It is a tribute to the black musicians of the 1920s and 30s who were part of the Harlem Renaissance.
The current Forestburgh Playhouse production of the show makes this genre come alive. It is a delightful ending to this season at the playhouse.
A simple set shows off the five performers and their music with no distractions,
The first act ensemble work is marvelous, leading to the second act’s show-stopping solos by Aaron Reeder who moves with the grace of a snake in
“The Viper’s Drag,” Galyana Castillo in “Mean to Me,” Troy Scarborough in “Your Feet’s Too Big,” Chelsea Waller in “That Ain’t Right” and Sharmaine McGinnis in “Keepin’ Out of Mischief Now,” all presented with great vocal talent and energetic dance moves.
The men engage the audience in a rousing rendition of “Fat and Greasy” and the quintet performs a moving “Black and Blue,” their voices in wonderful harmony.
All in all a feet-stomping, hand-clapping enjoyable evening enhanced by some wonderful music played by talented musicians onstage at all times throughout this delightful evening.
“Ain’t Misbehavin’” continues through September 4 with performances Tuesday – Saturday at 8 p.m., Sundays at 3 p.m. and Wednesday at 2 p.m.
