Twice Divorced – By Grayce Goin
Dear Twice Divorced,
I recently began a job that requires me to stand on my feet for eight hours a day, much of it in the same spot. There is some walking around, lifting and bending and stretching, but for the most part I am confined to a two-foot-by-two foot area.
At the end of the day my feet hurt dreadfully. Is there any type of special footwear that would alleviate the strain on my feet and lower back?
Thanks for your help,
Foot Sore
Dear Sore,
There are a variety of shoes to assist with your problems. The right one for you would depend on many factors. Do you have diabetes, arthritis, tendinitis, high or low arches or some other issue affecting your feet? If this is the case I recommend you see a podiatrist. Is your back problem chronic or job specific? If chronic see an orthopedist.
If these issues do not apply to you, do some serious shoe shopping and don’t go cheap – a few extra dollars spent now could well make the difference in your longevity at this job. Make sure the shoes you purchase provide solid support for your feet, are well cushioned and comfortable. I also suggest wearing cotton socks when you are working to help your feet breathe.
